Creating Timeless Curb Appeal for North Idaho 4 Seasons

Creating Timeless Curb Appeal: Classic Exterior Design Tips

With nicer weather on the horizon, I’ve been thinking a lot about exterior design and ways of creating Timeless Curb Appeal. Your home’s exterior, including its outdoor living spaces, is the first thing people notice, making curb appeal an essential aspect of homeownership. In this guide, we’ll explore strategies to enhance your home’s exterior with classic and enduring design elements.

1. Classic Landscaping Ideas for Lasting Beauty

A lush, well-maintained lawn instantly elevates your home's appearance. Keep grass neatly trimmed, edges defined, and flower beds weed-free. We live in an area where choosing deer tolerant plants should also be a consideration. Opting for perennial plants that bloom year after year, such as Lavender and Sage, provide consistent beauty without the need for constant replanting and their smell acts as a detraction from wildlife.

2. Exterior Color Palettes That Never Go Out of Style

Trendy colors may come and go, but a neutral, timeless palette can keep your home looking elegant for decades. Whites, grays, beiges, and soft blues or greens offer a sophisticated and lasting appeal. Accentuate architectural details with complementary trim colors for a polished look.

Often, I will see the fascia painted a different color than the rest of the trim to highlight steep rooflines and add drama to the elevation. Drawing color inspiration for wood stains or masonry on the home is another great way to create a cohesive color scheme that will stand the test of time.

3. Durable & Elegant Exterior Materials for Curb Appeal

When choosing materials for your exterior, ensure you’re selecting durable options such as masonry, brick, wood, and fiber cement. These materials not only withstand the test of time but also add an element of sophistication and authenticity to your property. Masonry or brick on lower portions of your home will protect the home from snow pile up that can often deteriorate certain siding types.

Also, while wood is great with temperature swings and fluctuations, keep in mind, stained wood will require upkeep and maintenance. If maintenance upkeep is a concern, consider wood for accenting the home in areas such as porch posts and beams, or corbels.

Finally, fiber cement siding has increased in popularity due to its durability and low maintenance.  It’s made from a blend of cement, sand, and cellulose fibers and is designed to mimic the appearance of wood, while offering superior longevity and resistance to the elements.

4. Entryway & Front Door Ideas for Timeless Charm

Your front door is a focal point that sets the tone for the entire exterior. A well-crafted wooden or fiberglass door in a timeless style enhances your home’s character.

Pair it with elegant hardware, a stylish welcome mat, and tasteful lighting to create a warm and inviting entrance. Adding window side lights or a transom window can also enhance curb appeal by adding elegance, plenty of natural light, and architectural interest!

5. Outdoor Lighting Tips for Classic Home Exteriors, Enhancing Outdoor Living Spaces

Good lighting improves both aesthetics and security. Install classic style sconces near your front door and on the front of your garage, using variations in size to create appropriate scale.

Typically, I would recommend a 15” sconce or larger on the garage and a 12” sconce for the front porch area. Positioning lights symmetrically on the home will also naturally draw the eye and create a sense of harmony on the front elevation.

If your entrance is asymmetrical, consider lighting placement as a way to add interest to the home. To assist in wayfinding and create a charming ambiance, place path lights along walkways. Solar-powered or energy-efficient LED lights provide long-lasting illumination without increasing energy costs.

Additionally, landscape lighting to illuminate trees can create a dramatic and elegant effect. Uplighting trees enhances their natural beauty, adds depth to the yard, and improves nighttime curb appeal. It also increases security by eliminating dark areas around the home.
